Save Our Vanishing Flora 2013 · 10 January 2013

At Plantlife, our aim is to make lasting positive change for wildflowers, plants and fungi. Our goal is to help mitigate the impact of climate change while rebuilding biodiversity within our ecosystems. We regularly join forces with others to ensure our money, influence and impact can go further.

Story

The beauty of our wild flowers is truely magical...But this is one vanishing act we could do without.

Our latest reserach has shown that the following species were present at the time of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee but gone by the Diamond Jubilee:

·         Bell heather- gone from Middlesex

·         Mountain pansy- gone from Monmouthshire

·         Deptford pink- gone from Huntingdonshire

·         Alpine saxifrage- gone from Caithness

·         Fragrant agrimony- gone from Easter Ross

·         Green-flowered helleborine- gone from Cheshire

·         Shepherd’s needle- gone from Durham

·         Corn mint- gone from Banffshire

·         Meadow saffron- gone from Northamptonshire

·         Sea pea- gone from Caenarfonshire

Facing a very difficult future

·         Burnt orchid lost from 27counties

·         Great sundew survives in just one colony in North Aberdeenshire

·         Snakeshead fritillary lost from Northamptonshire and 16 other counties

·         Starfruit all but gone from Britain’s shallow ponds

Plantlife is acting to prevent further losses- These latest research findings were published in our report Our Vanishing Flora to highlight the dramatic and irreversible losses suffered by British wild plants and topress for greater action by governments and policy-makers.

The report provides extremely powerful evidence supporting our efforts to:

·         make sure wild plants are at the forefront of the nature conservation agenda

·         have even greater impact on the ground through our conservation projects to save species.

Please help us make an even greater difference for the most vulnerable plants and fungi.

Your support for the Spring Appeal will help us further invigorate our fight to stop species loss – saving species such as Deptford pink in England, mountain pansy in Wales and alpine saxifrage in Scotland.

Thank you for your generous and continued support.
