As many of you know Scarlett and Harry entered the world a bit earlier than expected. It was their good fortune to arrive at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent, where they were nursed to recovery in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Simply, without the expertise, dedication and love of the nurses and doctors there, Scarlett and Harry wouldn't be with us today.
As a way of saying thankyou and to help other babies and families born into a similar situation, I cycled from London to Paris at the end of July, a total of 289 miles in 4 days. I was joined by Dad, Mick and PJ at Ashford for the last 15 miles or so and just about made it up the hill to the top of the cliff to finish a gruelling day. Once in France, the weather picked up and I made good progress, despite it being a lot more up and down than I was expecting. We were very fortunate with the weather and managed to avoid any punctures or mechanical problems. I did get a bit lost on the way into Paris but turning right off the place de la concorde and seeing the arc de triomphe at the top of the champs elysees was a pretty good feeling!
We funded the trip ourselves to avoid paying costs to an organising company so all money raised goes to the neonatal unit. We camped en route and after two restless nights in the tent, Scarlett and Harry eventually got used to it!
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me. East Kent Hospitals Nhs Trust Charitable Fund, which is the umbrella charity, gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation. By prior agreement with the charity the money raised is subsequently distributed to the neonatal unit, typically put towards the latest equipment or additional training for staff in the latest neonatal nursing methods. From experience we know that progress over just the last 10 years made a huge difference to Scarlett and Harry.
Thanks Mandy, Jim, Scarlett and Harry xxxx
