Story

One scrap van, two brothers, nine days, five thousands miles and loads of snow!

Most people wouldn’t even take this  van to the shops yet alone across Scandinavia in mid winter, aiming to reach Europe’s most northerly city inside the Arctic Circle. Wish them luck, they’re going to need it!

The Challenge

There and back in 9 days (500 miles a day) to make sure they are both back at work on Monday! Leaving Northampton on February 14th from the MNDA headquarters – David Niven House, 10-15 Notre Dame Mews, Northampton, NN1 2BG – Ferry from Dover to Calais, France, then Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and finally Norway – then back again! It’s mid winter so conditions of -30 degrees  and blizzards will push the van and the guys to their limit. No cosy hotels either, they are sleeping in the back of the van! With all the ice and snow, it means 4x4 is essential, but of course they don’t have that! It’s a challenge for sure, with one aim – to raise awareness for MNDA.

The Van

It cost £70, was saved from the crusher and has had a hard life. Every panel is dented, the brakes are questionable, the heating doesn’t work and there are holes in the floor – so yes, it’s fit for the scrapyard alright! Top speed of this 20 year old Citroen C15 van is 65mph downhill, and you can forget luxuries of ABS, 4x4, traction control and airbags because it doesn’t have them! Will it make the distance, the terrain, the ice, the freezing temperatures and the snow? Probably not, but that’s the challenge and charity is the winner!

The Charity

The Motor Neurone Disease Association is the only national charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland that funds and promotes global research into the disease and provides support for people affected by MND. They do all they can to enable everybody living with MND to receive the best care, achieve the highest possible quality of life and to die with dignity.
