‘We are all affected by cancer. We can all help.’

Words I say almost weekly at talks and presentations across East Lancashire and the more I say them the truer I know they are. Working for Macmillan I’ve naturally spent time with and lost some pretty amazing people due to this unprejudiced disease and I’ve also personally had to see one of the most beautiful and creative people I know go through hell and back because of it. It ruins lives in more ways than we can imagine. I’m lucky enough through work to see the benefit Macmillan has on people’s lives, the serious work we do often behind closed doors without any fanfare for the benefit of ordinary people who really need our support is second to none. As one of the community fundraisers I’m able to participate in more of the ‘fanfare driven’ work and spend my time with some of Macmillan’s best volunteers and staff who inspire me and many others to raise money and do our best in any way we can. I thought the time had come to focus less on the coffee and cake style events I’m used to and volunteer to climb several volcanoes in Iceland instead. I’m not fit, I don’t walk around as often as I should, I like my home comforts and there’s nothing better than a comfy bed at the end of the night and access to a working toilet 24/7. I’m willing to forsake all of these things in the hope that you might sponsor me to hike on this cold, damp, icy trek for people affected by cancer, people like my amazing birthday twin Jo who inspire me and countless others every day.
