MS Trust bring together expertise from every angle to help people feel more in control of their MS, today and every day. Through trusted information, compassionate support, the training of new MS healthcare professionals, and research rooted in real experience, we’re here for every MS. Every day.

Story

14 years ago my dad was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This central nervous system disease damages the myelin substance which surrounds nerves as a protective sheath, resulting in the disruption of messages to and from the brain and interference with a range of the body’s functions.

The causes of MS are not fully understood and although a lot of research is being done in this area, no real cure has been found yet. The MS Trust exists to enable the 85,000 MS sufferers in the UK to live their lives to the full.

As a fairly stubborn "mountain goat", and despite some partial paralysis, my dad has for the last few years been working towards achieving his life-time dream – re-building a 100-year old house in the French Alps, most of it on his own. A colossal project, which for a former architect is, I guess, the pinnacle of a life-long dream.

Running a marathon was never one of my dreams. But after seeing those around me achieve their dreams despite physical impairments, and seeing what other people do to support them, I have decided it’s my turn to act.

So, on Sunday 26 April I will be running my first marathon – yes, all 26.2 miles/42kms of it! Training started in the snow, in the Alps over Christmas, and actually continued in the snow, in London! I am very lucky to have been given a guaranteed place at this year’s Flora London Marathon and am now calling upon you to support me by raising money for the MS Trust, and give MS sufferers in the UK the opportunity for them also to realise their life-long dreams.

Donating through this site is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: MS Trust gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor me now and on 26 April, do come and cheer me on!

Thank you,

Seve

PS: and for those of you with New Year’s health resolutions, please help me alleviate the boredom of training by joining me on some of my weekends’ long runs for a 5K or 10K leg (or perhaps even more?!). I’m happy to run anywhere so just get in touch – skiing trip in winter 09/10 in a newly re-built house could be arranged...
