Story
To be honest for me this has been way over due. After losing my granddad to prostrate cancer in 2010 I told myself, 'This has to stop.' The 3rd person in my life I had lost to cancer by the age of just 20. My aunt later that year made 4th. I asked around and had arranged to take part in Race for Life and I was pretty sure I would, but as life does, it pasted on by and it never happened.
In July 2013 my younger brother and sister (aged 7 and 9) lost their dad to prostrate cancer. Yes this demon had struck again but just when we thought it was over and we had fought ever battle cancer had thrown at us. It struck again...ME!
September 2013 after an effectively normal day at work I went home with what I thought was a heavy period. Little did I know what was in store for me. After being 'haunted' by my mum and sister at early hours the following morning 'go to the hospital', 'Call a ambulance.' I reluctantly did just that. This is stupid I thought. 'I can't believe I'm in an ambulance going to the hospital for a period' I told my mum.
After hours of laughing and Joking with my mum. killing me of embarrassment. I sent her back home to my brother and sister. 'I'll be fine I said'... she left... 'Sorry to have to tell you this, but there's abnormalities in your blood results that are showing strong signs that you have something called AML'....Leukaemia!
I was healthy just like you. 23 with two children. I wouldn't be here for them today if it wasn't for Cancer Research UK. I survived! Let help others :)
