Thank you for taking the time to visit the JustGiving page for the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal.

This appeal is the latest appeal from charity Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust, in association with the national CF Trust, and aims to raise a total of £1million for a new dedicated Cystic Fibrosis ward for the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Centre.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is one of the UK´s most common life-threatening inherited diseases affecting some 8,000 children, teenagers and young adults.  There is currently no cure for this condition which primarily affects the lungs and the body’s ability to digest food and absorb nutrients. People with CF struggle with nutrition, growth, and maintaining weight, and experience recurrent chest infections which damage the lungs making breathing difficult leading to lung failure requiring a lung transplant or resulting in death.

The Sheffield Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre was set up 10 years ago and is now accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Trust as a Regional Specialist Centre. Planning has recently begun for a desperately-needed new ward for the Cystic Fibrosis Centre in Sheffield, which will transform inpatient treatment for teenagers (16+) and young adults from across a large geographical area, as well as providing much-improved outpatient facilities.

The CF Centre currently uses inpatient facilities on a medical ward which caters mainly for very elderly patients. CF patients, who are mainly teenagers or young adults, are being treated for up to two weeks at a time, several times a year, on a ward which is not suitable for either their clinical or personal needs. It has been known for CF patients to refuse or delay vital treatment because the prospect of spending time in this environment is so unattractive.

An ideal location has become available for a new 12-bed in-patient facility at the site in Sheffield. At 934 sq m. the space is large enough to allow for a gold standard facility, including private en-suite rooms designed to feel like a home from home, but that are also suitable for conducting essential medical procedures, including daycase procedures.

The new ward will provide a tailor-made environment to cater for young people with CF who require prolonged stays in hospital. There will be an integrated service with a team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and dieticians all focused on the needs of young people fighting this debilitating illness.  Modern design and state-of-the-art technology will enable the new regional Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Centre to be world-class.

Many thanks.
