Story

During our Intersections event at The Eden Project on 2nd March, we did something really rather special to raise money for ShelterBox - the international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by disaster worldwide.

The 'ShelterBox hotel' was constructed at Eden in the Mediterranean Biome on Wednesday 2nd March; built using approximately 10,000 (or roughly a 40ft lorry load of!) disused tent poles and other salvaged materials. student volunteers from Falmouth University College, visitors to Eden and a talented team from Expedition Engineering in London all worked together on the build.

The Hotel was an experiment in accommodation, designed as a safe structure with the help of highly acclaimed structural engineers, but created by all-comers.

There were a limited number of places available for delegates of our Intersections conference ( www.intersections2011.com) to stay at the 'Hotel' to swap a night in a bricks and mortar hotel for an incredible night camped out in the Eden biome under the stars.

The experience was Lo-fi but that doesn’t mean roughing it, think of camping with a luxury twist. We provided a unique experience including homely comforts, such as a locally sourced breakfast, laid back musical entertainment and other goodies.
