Having grown up in Shetland, I attended my local school where I was fortunate enough to receive my education. I saw this as a normal childhood. For me along with so many others, simple things like having a pencil, a notebook and school canteen was just part of our school day, however for so many people in the world, that’s just not the case.  
That’s where Mary’s Meals are trying to help.

Their idea is a simple one that works. They are a global movement that set up schools feeding projects in some of the world's poorest communities, where hunger and poverty stop children from gaining an education. They provide one daily meal in a place of education to attract poorer children into a classroom where they gain an education, along with being given a meal. Their education can, in the future be their ladder out of poverty.

Mary's Meals started by feeding 200 children and now feed over 923,572 hungry children everyday across 16 different countries in the world, the closest to Shetland being Bosnia, Ukraine and Romania. It costs an average of £12.20 to feed a child with Mary’s Meals for an entire year.

Mary’s Meals running costs are kept low due to the army of volunteers supporting them which means a massive 93p of every £1 that’s donated goes on their charitable work.
