At 6:58pm on April 16, 2016 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck offshore of the west coast of northern Ecuador. The epicenter of the quake was along the Pacific coast in a sparsely populated region.
At the time of writing, official reports state the number of deaths at 654, with a further 16,601 people injured. 6,990 buildings were destroyed and 281 schools have been affected.
