Iron Man 2011 · 26 June 2011
What started as banter in a curry house... ended up as me entering Iron Man 2011 in Nice; a triathlon consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bike and a marathon (26.2 miles, 42.195 km) run, raced in that order and without a break.
So I dug out the arm bands, attached the stabilisers and dusted off the muddy trainers and training has begun...
While putting myself through this torture I thought it would be a good idea to raise money for a worthwhile cause. The charity I have chosen is The Cystic Fibrosis Trust. www.cftrust.org.uk
Every week, five babies are born with Cystic Fibrosis, the UK's most common life-threatening inherited disease. In 2006 a friend's daughter, Erin, was one of them. In 2010, their second daughter, Sasha, was born. There was a 1 in 4 chance that Sasha would have CF and sadly, she did.
The family are getting to grips with having two CF children, they swing from coping fairly well, to being in a heap on the floor, all within the space of a few minutes.
The life expectancy of baby born today with CF is about 50, but things are getting better all the time. We hope that research will provide answers and eventually a cure so that Erin and Sasha can outlive their parents, and continue to live a full and happy lives.
The CF Trust is the UK's foremost charity for sufferers and families with CF. Their research and support is priceless. Please help me help them, by donating generously.
