Latest news - as we stand today the Big Blue Canoe (as it was christened by a tribal elder from Nova Scotia) is at the head of the pack sailing between Java and Sumatra on the race up to Singapore. From there they will then face down a very tough leg up to Qingdao (this leg defeated a number of the recent Volvo ocean racing boats) progressively moving from hot and humid conditions to weather similar to that we have been experiencing here recently. As you can imagine i have been focusing on thermal gear for when I join the boat!! My participation in the race starts on the 2nd March as the fleet races from Qingdao to San Francisco across the largest ocean in the world.

I am taking part in half of the Round The World Race with Clipper Ventures, joining the race in February 2010 in Qingdao, China and then racing back to the UK via California, Panama, the Caribbean, New York and Ireland ending up back in Hull during July 2010. About 400 people will take part in the race, which starts on September 13th in Hull on 10 identical 68' racing yachts and finishes 35,000 miles later back in Hull.

Sailing has always been a great way of developing team work and developing personally; facing and overcoming challenges. I have been particularly interested in how sailing has been used to help young people to learn skills.

I have been supporting Centrepoint for some time now but I wanted to use my participation in the race to race more money for a great charity. Just to give you some idea of what your donation can buy

£15 will buy a Fresh Start Pack - Contains a wash kit, towels and toiletries

£28 will help secure warm meals for a homeless young person for 4 days

£205 will help secure specialist support providing education, employment and health advice for 1 month

Whatever you can give will make a huge difference to the young people who pass through the care of Centrepoint
