A third of the way around the earth, from Europe to , via a plethora of countries most
people haven't heard of, in a car that has an engine with no bigger than 1 litre… Piece of cake!
Yep, think we could live to regret the “piece of cake” comment, but that is exactly the challenge myself, Tom Henry ,and my fellow adventurer Simon Todd have set ourselves as we sought a bit of adventure this summer! Therefore we are partaking in the Mongol Rally – a race (if you can call it that!) setting off from the Goodwood racetrack on the 18 July and finishing 3-4 weeks later in the capital of Mongolia, Ulan Batur. That will be 8-10,000 miles in a 998cc Nissan Micra… What are we thinking??!!
In the Mongol Rally there is no set course - you choose whatever path you like. We have chosen the southern route (see rough plan above). This is undoubtedly the tough route; braving the extreme heat of the Kazakh desert, skirting and and straight across . Initial plans show that we’re going to be traveling through fourteen (or more) countries (including as many “Stans” as possible)!
The Mongol Rally isn't just about adventure. One of the main “reason d’être” of the Mongolia Rally is to raise huge amounts for excellent charities in order to spread prosperity to areas of the world less fortunate than ourselves. In 2009 there are three overall Official Charities and all the funds raised by the teams supporting them will be directed to projects in . They main charity is Mercy Corps, who are helping to assist nomadic people to the challenges of modern day life by supporting rural communities and herding families through a range of projects that help them live an independent and sustainable life. The other two charities are childrens charities, CYPPD (Children and Young People’s Protection Development) and CNCF (Christina Noble Children’s Foundation), who run a variety of projects in that change the lives of kids who have often been given a pretty rough hand in life.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Mercy Corps gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
