Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Upon receiving confirmation of my place in the 2015 London Marathon the decision on who to raise money for  was an easy one. I will be raising money for The Papworth Hospital as they cured my sisters heart condition.

At aged 11 my sister Carrie was diagnosed with Supraventricular Tachycardia, a condition that resulted in her heart's rhythm going out of sync and beating too fast. This meant that every day tasks such as simply walking up and down the stairs became a struggle.  For 15 years the condition was kept in control through the use of various medicines though this did not limit the numerous trips back and forth to hospital.

After the birth of her first child which was made almost impossible with this condition, she had another attack of Tachycardia. The doctors treating her discovered she in fact had Atrial Tachycardia, a similar but different type of heart condition. It was at this point that Carrie was informed of a life changing operation available to her through the Papworth Hospital, a Catheter Ablation.

The procedure was a relatively new one at the time and came with risks like having a stroke, oesophageal injury and even death. The operation itself was an advanced one, involving advancing catheter tubes into her blood vessels, which are then moved towards the heart. Electrical impulses were then used to induce the arrhythmia, where the abnormal tissue causing the issue is then burnt away.

Upon the third attempt (after two unsuccessful ones), and after enduring a 5 hour operation, Carrie was finally cured of the heart condition that had held her back for the majority of her life. To this day she has had no more problems and is leading a healthy and happy life with her husband and three children.

For this, I am truly grateful to the incredible staff at the Papworth Hospital and is why I am raising money to go towards other life changing operations like the one that cured Carrie.
