Those of you who know me realise that I don't really have a general inclination to do much exercise although my body requires a certain level of fitness otherwise it gets grouchy. I've decided to now put this to good use and run the London Marathon.
Luckily the Karen Morris Memorial Trust (KMMT) had a place on their team as I know that the only way I'll actually do the training is if it's for something I really care about. I never knew Karen personally but one of her actions had a huge affect on my life. Karen ran a drive to get bone marrow donors for the Anthony Nolan Trust at Warwick University, as she had been diagnosed with leukaemia, and I signed up. Six months later I was told that I was a potential match to someone and then three months after that my bone marrow was winging its way to Sweden. My bone marrow did a good job and 2 years after the donation my man in Sweden was still 100% clear of leukaemia.
KMMT does an amazing job by providing facilities for leukaemia patients and their families which would not otherwise be available, thus alleviating just a little the emotional and physical pain at what is inevitably a very bleak period in their lives. They have flats at Hammersmith Hosptial to act as a home-from-home for patients and their families, along with funding complementary therapists. The work is ongoing which is why much needed valuable support is a must.
I feel extremely privileged to have been able to donate bone marrow and I suppose this is my thank you. However I do need your help to complete it so please help and sponsor me. Encouraging messages are also welcomed as I'm getting slightly scared by the training schedule!
