The Green Belt Movement (GBM) was founded by Wangari Maathai in 1977. It uses tree planting as an entry point for communities to take action on issues of land rights, environment and livelihoods. GBM works on climate change policy on forests on behalf of rural communities internationally.

Story

GBM has joined the Size of Wales to help plant and protect 2 million hectares of tropical forest as part of a national and international response to climate change! GBM will support local communities living near Mount Kenya to plant 8,000 trees and we need your help to do it! For every dollar, euro or pound you donate, Size of Wales will match it! But only for the month of February.

Kenya’s forest cover is slowly diminishing and at just under 2%, is way below United Nations recommendation level of 10%. The Mathira district in Kenya, a beautiful catchment area on Mt Kenya, is particularly affected by deforestation and is considered one of the poorer constituencies in the country.

Our target is to reach £4,000 ($6,300) for this project, and the matched funding provided by Size of Wales will allow us to be twice as productive and plant twice as many trees!

All the trees planted will contribute to GBM’s ‘‘I am a hummingbird’’ campaign, which aims to plant 1 Billion trees to honour the memory of Professor Wangari Maathai.
