The South Coast Roll - Skating Marathon · 26 August 2012

Following the horrific murder of Sophie Lancaster, her family wanted to ensure a lasting legacy to their beautiful, bright creative daughter and so The Sophie Lancaster Foundation was established and it became a registered charity in 2009. We do this through various means including education.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Joe and I are going to be roller skating for 5 hours around Goodwood Motor Circuit in August to raise funds and awareness of Sophie Lancaster

So please sponsor me to skate a marathon on her behalf.

Sophie was mercilessly beaten to death by a gang of thugs, whilst trying to protect her boyfriend Robert Maltby in 2007. Police believe they were targetted for wearing alternative fashions.

Five teenage boys were later arrested and charged with murder. Two of them were convicted of murder and sentenced to life-imprisonment. The other three were convicted and jailed for grievous bodily harm.  The foundation is seeking to have these types of crimes catergorized as hate crimes, similarly treated in court to that of racist motivations. This act could reach not only those in alternative communities, but will defend your right, and our childrens rights to be exactly who they want to be.

·       To provide educational group-works that will challenge the prejudice and intolerance towards people from alternative subcultures.

·       To campaign to have the UK Hate Crime legislation extended to include people from “alternative subcultures” or “Lifestyle and Dress”
