Story
There are now more slaves in the world than ever before with an estimated 27 million currently being held captive and exploited around the world. The average age of a trafficked victim is just 12 years old and only 1-2% of victims are ever rescued and 1 in 100, 000 European Traffickers ever convicted.
THIS HAS TO STOP!
Friday 18th October is the UK's annual Anti-Slavery Day (http://www.antislaveryday.com/). People all over the country will be coming together and organising events to raise awareness of this heinous crime and money for the various anti-trafficking charities. The problem I am aware of is that with it being a Friday most people will be at work and so unable to really attend any events. I wanted to still get involved despite this so came up with an idea and have been in contact with the organisers of Anti-Slavery Day who loved the idea and I am now spearheading a new campaign for the day, it's 'Be a Slave for a Day'.
The idea is that those of you who are working that day work out how much you would earn for that one day and give it to one of the anti-slavery charities so that you are basically working for free for a day like a slave would so it raises awareness of what it is like and at the same time gives money to the anti-slavery charities who do so much work rescuing and rehabilitating victims and seeing their captors are caught and brought to justice.
Please spread the word amongst friends, families, community groups, Churches, schools, Universities, any contacts you may have!
Even if you don't work Friday's you could still work out your wage for another day and donate or if you don't have a job please still donate some money. I know, especially when you're a student like me, a day's wage is quite a bit of money but these guys need it way more than we do. As least we have our freedom.
Please I so encourage you to do this, human trafficking is a massive issue and something desperately needs to be done about it. The work of these groups so far the past few years have already led to the 'Modern Day Slavery Bill' and we need to carry on this momentum.
