Story
Thousands of budding athletes across Europe entered the Eurostar Tri-City-Athlon, and thanks to many of you I was voted in to the top 50 with over 300 votes. I was then whittled down to the final 20 by the panel of judges (including James Cracknell :-) ) to represent the UK and take part in this amazing event. As you can imagine... I am UUuuber excited!
It will be the first ever tri-city-athlon...a triathlon that takes place on 14th September 2010 starting off with a 1.5km swim in Paris, a 40km bike ride around Brussels and a 10km run around Regents Park in London...all on the same day. I only started competing in Triathlons last year...in fact until last year I couldn't swim and was petrified of the water but being a keen cyclist and runner I had always wanted to compete in what is undoubtedly the King of Sports. To do that I needed to conquer my fear and conquer I did. Since then I have competed in 3 triathlons including one open-water tri which is a pretty BIG thing when a trip past the lifeguards chair in the 25m pool sent you queasy all of 18 months ago!
I am raising money for a charity that is very poignant to me. A very special friend of mine lost her father, a true hero, last year after many years battling against cancer. Major Jonathan Lear OBE was a Royal Marine, an absolute lover of outdoor pursuits and one of the most amazing men I have had the pleasure to meet. I will be raising money for FORCE who are a local charity supporting families and anyone affected by cancer in Devon. Jonathan Lear was an avid fundraiser right up until his last year and whose family are very grateful for the work and support that Force gave to them in the later part of his life. I was so incredibly moved and inspired by the eulogies at Jonathan's funeral last year that I promised myself that I would try and do something in his honour to raise money for Force.
The opportunity to swim in what is, in my opinion, the most beautiful city in the world, to cycle in Brussels and culminate with a run in my home country in Regents Park will be phenomenal both for the memories and the personal achievement. I love to have a goal and generally try to set myself a new challenge every year...last year I learnt to swim...this year I will be competing in the inaugural tri-city-athlon and I hope to raise as much money as possible for this fantastic charity.
