Prakash Kaur, herself an orphan, founded the organization as a means of protecting abandoned girls. Whereas the birth of a son is greeted with joy (he will earn an income and stay at home after marriage), the birth of a daughter is considered inauspicious. </span><span style="font-size: 13px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Collectively, India has killed some 10 million girls in the past 20 years.</span><span style="font-size: 13px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> And contrary to popular belief, female infanticide is not a process confined to the poor and uneducated. As they scale the socioeconomic ladder, families in want of male offspring have more options; and abortion becomes even more common.
