Story
In 2006, I travelled to Lonavala, India on a JCWP alongside other international volunteers. We worked alongside the future homeowners and their families, and managed to construct 100 homes in one week with the assistance of the local tradesmen. The experience was so memorable and worthwhile that I've decided to volunteer again this year to help change the lives and bring hope to those most in need.
In August, I and 13 other team mates will travel to Massaca, Mozambique with Habitat for Humanity on the (OVC) 'Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s Programme'.
In Mozambique alone, there over 1.5 million orphans, 500,000 due to HIV/AIDS. Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world and these orphans are exceptionally vulnerable. The OVC project addresses the need for a simple, decent home but also the needs that vulnerable children have for legal protection, clean water, proper sanitation, food, safety, education and social supports.
Last year a team from HFHNI travelled to this same village and in just a few short weeks managed to construct 15 houses! This trip had such an impact on the team that Neil, Debbie and Caoimhe decided to revisit the region and lead a team. These homes provide not just shelter but also security for local families and children (see picture, left) as the project works with the future home owners to secure their inheritance rights and land ownership.
We will work alongside local tradesmen with the support of the future homeowners aiming to build 15 to 20 houses but we need your support to do so!
We only have several months to reach our targets of £1,800 so please dig deep and find it in your hearts (and bank balance J) to donate as much as you can!!!
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Habitat for Humanity Northern Ireland will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
Many thanks!!!
