This delicious recipe book is in aid of one of United Through Sport’s key projects - The Umzingisi School of Sporting Excellence based in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Run by local project partners, the school brings together top sports coaching and quality secondary education for children living in the disadvantaged township region of Ibhayi in Port Elizabeth. The aims of the school are to not only enhance sporting levels in football, netball and rugby but also to offer a fully rounded education to increase the choices available to these talented yet disadvantaged children. Students are given the kind of attention and education that is hard to achieve in a regular school, as well as additional life skills training in subjects such as HIV/AIDS awareness, alcohol and drug abuse and career guidance.
With over 100 children attending the school, there is an increasing need to provide an on-site soup kitchen’ where the children can enjoy a free meal to help them deal with the demands of a strenuous day’s training. For many of them, this will be their main, and sadly only, substantial meal of the day. Without it, they simply wouldn’t have the energy or stamina to achieve their full potential.
This little recipe book was put together to celebrate the continued success of the school and to raise funds for a much needed soup kitchen. Thank you to all of our supporters who have shared their favourite recipes with us and helped make this book a reality. We hope you enjoy making and tasting the delicious recipes. In particular, watch out for our guest recipes from South Africa!
