Story

This Mother's Day, Sparks South West is raising funds for medical research to find cures and treatments for conditions affecting babies, children and mothers to be.  Research is carried out into Cancer, Meningitis, Arthritis and Cerebral Palsy to name but a few conditions.

Last year, a Sparks’ funded project saved the life of Baby Riley Joyce.  When Riley was born he was not breathing and faced the possibility of permanent brain injury.  Riley was transferred to St Michael's Hospital, Bristol where he became the first newborn baby to receive xenon gas treatment. Professor Marianne Thoresen pioneered the treatment and spoke of his early progress ‘After seven days, Riley was alert, able to look at his mother's face, hold up his head and begin to take milk.’
