<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; color: black; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">T</span><span style="font-size: 11.5pt; color: black; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">his Mother's Day, Sparks South West is raising funds for medical research to find cures and treatments for conditions affecting babies, children and mothers to be. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Research is carried out into Cancer, Meningitis, Arthritis and Cerebral Palsy to name but a few conditions.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 11.5pt; color: black; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Last year, a Sparks’ funded project saved the life of Baby Riley Joyce. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When Riley was born he was not breathing and faced the possibility of permanent brain injury. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Riley was transferred to St Michael's Hospital, Bristol where he became the first newborn baby to receive <span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">xenon gas treatment. Professor</span> Marianne Thoresen pioneered the treatment and spoke of his early progress<em style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"> ‘After seven days, Riley was alert, able to look at his mother's face, hold up his head and begin to take milk.’ <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></em></span></p>
