WHY ARE WE DOING IT?
In honour of Lily ,a beloved daughter, grand daughter, sister, niece & cousin, who took her own life owing to bullying on 19th May 2017, I have organised a spin-a-thon for Saturday 26th August. Lily was just 13 years old and such a beautiful soul. Her kindness and happiness touched us all. She was happy and enthusiastic with a cheeky sense of humour and her memory deserves to be honoured with change, a change she has inspired.
'Lily's Spin For Change' will last for 7 hours and will run from 9:30 - 16:30, the length of an average school day and therefore the length of time one child who is having a hard time would have to spend in an environment that feels impossible, uncomfortable yet unavoidable for them. I choose a Spinathon as opposed to any other sporting activity as I like the concept of the ongoing momentum and find it to be synonymous with the cause and the need to keep going, to keep strong and to keep together.
The issue of young suicide is an issue that is gaining more and more momentum and that doesn't require, but instead demands to be made public and discussed and understood fully in order to be eliminated.
Just as we teach children to stand up to bullies, we should teach everyone of all ages to stand up to the issue of bullying.
'Lily's Spin for Change' will be held at Frome Lesiure Centre who have kindly agreed to allow us full use of their Spin bikes for the full time and who will have a first aid trainer and instructor on hand throughout.
Throughout the 7 hours people sign up for one hour slots (or more if you're feeling brave!) with a maximum of 24 bikes available per hour and we look to have a minimum of 5 people in the spin studio at all times throughout the 7 hours. The cause doesn’t rest so neither do the spin bikes. Personally, I will cycle for the full 7 hours...so please sign up, the more will definitely be the merrier!
As Frome Leisure centre welcomes young people and works with local schools and is therefore in the very heart of the community, I believe that they are the perfect host for the cause I am fighting for. WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN?
This bit is simple.
Suicide is the biggest killer of young people – male and female – under 35 in the UK. In 2015, 1,659 young people took their own lives. That equates to over four per day. Every year many thousands more attempt or contemplate suicide, harm themselves or suffer alone, afraid to speak openly about how they are feeling.
