In recent years I have cycled in China, India, the Grand Canyon and London to Paris raising about £15000 for charity.   I am enormously grateful for the support from friends that helped me to reach this magnificent total.  I am 63 this year and so coming to the end of my time doing long distance bike rides.  However, I am sure there is one more ride in me!  This time it is Vietnam and Cambodia and I'm raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society.    This November I am cycling some 500Km from Saigon to Angkor Wat.  So it is back to the exercise regime and back to twisting arms to sponsor me. I am paying all the costs of the trip myself so all the money you give will go straight to the Alzheimer’s Society.    There are 750000 dementia sufferers and the numbers are still growing.  Two-thirds are women. The proportion of people with dementia doubles for every 5 year age group. Dementia is a term used to describe various different brain disorders that have in common a loss of brain function that is usually progressive and eventually severe. There are many types of dementia. I know from experience the devastating effect that this miserable disease has on its victims and their families. Sadly it is an illness that gets only a tiny fraction of the government funding that goes to cancer and heart disease.   Money is needed to provide more research, and better treatment and support for patients.   I started off with a target of £2000.  People have been so supportive that in April I was able to set a new target of £3000.  With five months to go this has been exceeded so now I'm going for £4000, which with Gift Aid would mean a total of £5000 raised.
