Story

SREBRENICA PEACE MARCH

The Srebrenica Walk, or „Peace March“, commemorated in Bosnia and Herzegovina every year on the 11th of July, is a three day long walk across the hills and woods of Eastern Bosnia. It is an organised march to commemorate the anniversary of the genocide in the former Eastern Bosnian Muslim enclave during the war.  The 100-kilometre walk will go through the same path taken by the refugees in 1995, where thousands of Bosnian Muslims were killed while trying to escape the massacre in Srebrenica and reach the free territories in the country's North.

It will start on July 8th and end on July 11th. Participants will start from the safe territory and will end in Potočari, thus following in reverse the tracks of the original walk carried out during the war. http://www.marsmira.org/. At the end of the three-day long march, we reach the town of Srebrenica for one last camping night.  This is the 14th anniversary of the massacre, but the pain is still real and with the burial of new remains; the mourning is far from over.

The Rainbow Family Programme in Bosnia offers sponsorship for orphans or children from destitute families. All of them, without exception, have been affected one way or another by this tragedy. Every Rainbow Family child has lost at least one member of his family during that 1995 genocide, or trying to escape during this walk.

As a support for these children and their families as well as to try and raise funds for our Rainbow Family Programme, the Muslim Aid team here Edina Šehić and Salma Khattab will participate in this event.  We are already joined by Rainbow Family member Semir Omerovic.

With the money raised, Muslim Aid will implement the Mobile Library and IT Centre Project for the remote population of Eastern Bosnia. The main aim of this dual project is to provide free training for children and youth in IT knowledge, free languages classes (English, German...) as well as access to general knowledge, culture, education and leisure through books, educational material and documentaries otherwise inaccessible and unavailable. The project will also provide these secluded children a gathering centre where they can socialise, interact and connect, thus diminishing their sense of isolation.  The mobility of the library will maximise the impact of the project through a wider population.

In this light, we appeal to your generosity to help us make this dream come true, and establish this project here in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  By sponsoring our walk, you will help further educate and improve lives of hundreds of children throughout Eastern Bosnia.
