S.T.A.A.G Thames Pedalo Adventure · 9 May 2008

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

On June 2nd of this year we, St Andrews Alternative Adventure Group (S.T.A.A.G.) are embarking on an adventure demanding mental and physical toughness not normally associated with the stereotypical lethargic student! Over 9 days we are taking a standard Pedalo (with an average speed of 2mph) up 127 miles (203 km) of the river Thames from Oxford to Greenwich. Between the four of us we hope to raise over £2000 for the vital work of the Alzheimer's Society.

Hows it all going?
We have started training, and the full magnitude of what we have let ourselves in for is fast becoming apparent! It is the equivalent distance of completing five and a half full marathons, except in a Pedalo with your knees around your ears!

Why did we choose the Alzheimers Society?
The cause is very close to all our hearts as we all know of someone who has the disease and three of us have family members who have suffered or are suffering from the disease.  Statistics tell us that over 700,000 people in the UK suffer from various forms of dementia and the majority of these will be living with carers who have little or no government support, showing just how vital the work of the Alzheimer's society actually is.

Further information about S.T.A.A.G can be found at www.yourunion.net/staag and if you would like to know more about the Alzheimer's Society and their work please visit www.alzheimers.org.uk

Please show your support to this group of brave/foolish students.
