I have chosen to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro in loving memory of by my beautiful Nan Alice and my Grandad Brian who has in the past month been diagnosed with non hodgkin's lymphoma. He is currently being treated in Kettering General Hospital and the treatment looks to be going well.
We lost my Nan very suddenly to Bowel Cancer 6 years ago last April and I want to do everything I can to help prevent it, and help those inflicted by it.
On September 17th 2010, I will be travelling to Tanzania with a group of 52 other people where we will face our toughest walk ever!
At 19,340ft Kilimanjaro is the continents highest peak as well as being the tallest freestanding volcano in the world! I will be walking for approximately 6-7 hours a day at some points in temperatures as low as -25 degrees. If you know me I really do not like the cold! This will be a personal challenge in itself. Rob you had better take extra layers with you if you want to stay warm.
Then on the last day we'll walk for 16 -18 hours where we'll reach the summit and this will begin early hours of the morning in the dark!
If this still hasn't convinced you to sponsor me just think, I'll have to go 6 days without showering, washing my hair, wearing make up and having only 2 pairs of shoes with me, my trainers and my walking boots, plus we will not have access to any alcohol. Now if that isn't worth sponsoring I don't know what is!
For those of you who don’t know Velindre Cancer Centre is the largest non-surgical cancer Hospital in Wales providing Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy and other specialised anti-cancer treatments for over half the people of Wales. They have been providing care and support to cancer patients and their families in Wales for over 50 years.
Every year they provide care, treatment and support for over 100,000 people. Due to early detection and improved treatments the number of people in Wales living with cancer is increasing daily. It is estimated that by 2015 there will be a 30% increase in the most common forms of cancer. They are determined to raise the money necessary to enable them to meet these new challenges – and I want to help.
Treating 109,000 patients in 2008 with projections that 2009 will see an increase to 119,000 patients treated, it is evident that the work that they do touches the lives of many families, its highly likely that Velindre has treated one of your family members.
