Paris Marathon · 16 March 2008

BTRC works with a Neurosciences team at Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals (Imperial College London) to promote research into the causes of brain tumours and possible new treatments, to raise public awareness of the desperate need for this research and the current lack of funding.

Story

I have now completed the Paris marathon which was held on the 6th April 2008. I covered the 26.2 miles in a personal best time of 3 hours 49 min 11 sec. For me a great achievement to finally break the 4 hour barrier.

An even greater milestone is the amount of money you have all donated to the BTRC over the last month. I am really appreciative of how generous you have all been.

Thank you all very much for your support.

If you have just arrived at this page and still wish to make a donation please read on:

A couple of weeks ago learnt that a friend of mine had suddenly lost his father to brain cancer. Danny's father Nick had been fine until late January when he complained of blured vison in his left eye, he then became forgetful and confused and was later diagnosed with a tumour in his brain (Glioblastoma). There is no effective cure for this type of cancer.

On the 1st February Nick had an operation to remove the tumour, however this was unsuccesful and sadly Nick passed away on the 1st March 2008.

"Brain tumours affect people of all ages: there is a need for a better understanding of what causes them, how the brain reacts to them and how they behave - and an even greater need for better and more effective treatments."

  • They are the most common cause of cancer death in children under 15 years of age
  • They are the 5th most common malignancy of people of working age
  • They are the 2nd fastest growing cause of cancer death in adults over 65
  • Over 6,000 primary malignant tumours are diagnosed in the UK each year
  • The incidence of brain tumours has increased by 30-40% in the past 30 years - that's 2% each year

I therefore decided to run the Paris marathon on the 6th April 2008 in memory of Nick and also to raise money for the Brain Tumour Research Campaign (BTRC).
