Story
Hello!!
Thanks for visiting our Justgiving page!
Having just returned from our medical elective at Kilimatinde Hospital, Tanzania we decided that it was time to get our act together and do some fundraising to help the hospital install solar electricity.
Kilimatinde hospital is a rural, mission hospital serving a population of 70,000. The mission of the hospital is to “reach marginalized people living in the remote villages, providing them with essential health services.” The Tanzanian government has promised Kilimatinde hospital reliable electric power by 2025. Currently the hospital relies upon fuel generators which are expensive to run in terms of maintenance and fuel consumption. Kerosene lamps are the hospital's only source of light after dark, and are not sufficient for procedures. The hospital is sited on the edge of the Great Rift Valley and receives a minimum of 12 hours sunshine on most days. This free energy source can be exploited by introducing solar power to the hospital. At a cost of just £18 000, the eight main departments could be provided with electricity. This simple luxury, which in England we take for granted, could make the world of difference to this rural hospital in Tanzania.
Fran and Laura will be doing the Yorkshire 3 peaks- a 23.5 mile walk, with 1586m ascent (and descent!), completed (hopefully!) within 12 hours, to raise funds for this worthwhile cause.
Please support us with our fundraising and be as generous as you can, so that we can help Kilimatinde hospital to have power!
Thanks so much!
Laura and Fran
