The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the coasts of the UK and the Republic of Ireland. RNLI lifeguards provide a seasonal lifeguard service on selected beaches. An average of 21 people are rescued every day from the water, in situations which are often difficult and sometimes dangerous. The RNLI is independent from Government, relying on donations for its income, so can only continue thanks to people like you. The RNLI is a charity registered in England and Wales (209603) and Scotland (SCO37736). Charity number CHY 2678 in the Republic of Ireland.

My story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page which we have set up in Steve's name to raise more money for the Hoylake Lifeboat Appeal.

On September 26th 2009 a group of Steve Birkby's friends took part in the West Kirby Dragon Boat Challenge in aid of the appeal - some photos of the day are attached above and there are more at http://www.flickr.com/photos/stevebirkbydragonboatchallenge.

Steve was a very keen supporter of the RNLI and in particular had a great interest in the new lifeboat station, just around the corner from our home in Hoylake, which he watched being built and watched the crew bring the lifeboat to for the first time in February.

It seems fitting that this charity should benefit in Steve's name. An amazing amount has already been raised, firstly through donations at the time of Steve's death in February and secondly through this fundraising event.

We are now aiming to raise enough money to buy specific items which the crew have requested for the new station, namely a pair of high powered binoculars which will bear Steve's name and a spine board and we are well on the way to doing this.

Many thanks to everyone who has donated so far and to all those in Team Birkers and Team Mason Owen who gave up their time and put in such a huge effort to make the Dragon Boat Challenge such a great event and a fitting tribute to Steve.

Please encourage anyone who hasn't yet done so to make a donation and add to the already fantastic amount raised, the event may be over but the fund raising isn't.
