Story

Hi,

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page , please consider supporting the work of the NSPCC . I have seen the support they provide to children in traumatic circumstances and how their help does make a difference . One of their services is 'CHILDLINE', if a child has the courage to call that number in a desparate situation it is vital that facility is available.

To celebrate the Millenium local runner Nigel Jenkins set off from Sheepstor and ran the inaugural 'Dartmoor Round' on New Years Eve , as far as I am aware it has not yet been repeated.

To celebrate my birthday I am setting off from the Oak Tree at Meavy at 12.00pm on Sat 5th July 2008 to try and repeat the run . It has been extended  to 80 miles and from Meavy the route is as follows :-

Sheepstor , Sharpitor , Ingra Tor , Pew Tor , Cox Tor , Standon Hill , Ger Tor , Bray Tor , Branscombes Loaf , High Willhays , Oke Tor , Cosdon Beacon , Rippa Tor , Thornworthy Tor , Hameldon Tor , Hameldon Beacon , Corndon Tor , Sharp Tor , Pupers Hill , Cornydon Ball , Butterdown Hill , Western Beacon , Staldon Burrow , Penn Beacon , Trowlesworthy Tor , Gutter Tor , Sheepstor and back to the Royal Oak at Meavy for a pint of Jail ale !

Hopefully I will complete it and in under 24 hours which is the 'challenge' ! I will keep you posted.

UPDATE 1000HRS 06/07/08 - I started with a forcast of heavy rain in the hope that the weather would improve enroute , it didn't ! All went well until the first major river crossing , the Tavy was thundering down the valley which called for a 8km detour and the start of the swimming sections ! This involved jumping into the fast flowing river and striking out for the opposite bank before I got swept into the next set of rapids . The first swim finished off my my mobile phone , after three more swims and some long detours I arrived at the Okehampton check point two hours late having covered 30 miles . This leg should have been about 19 miles !

With further larger rivers to cross in darkness I decided to postpone the run due to the risk involved and the route was not possible in 24 hours with the detours required.

UPDATE 20/07/08

At last I completed the run in 22hrs 16 mins !

2.00am on Saturday morning was wet and windy as we left Meavy to head north and remained 'damp' until the change of support runners near Okehampton but at least the rivers were passable this time. The weather improved throughout the day giving an enjoyable run South towards Vennford reservoir. From here it continued to go well without too much suffering until Harford Moor gate . 12 miles to home and I really began to suffer!  The final climb up Sheepstor was the slowest walk of my life and the down hill after not much faster but we finished in time for me to fall asleep over a pint of Jail Ale in the Royal Oak !

This is only possible thanks to support from many people including - Ian Bowles , Mike Faulkner , Nigel Jenkins , Craig Ford , Steve Bettey , Dave Salt , Terry Bradfield , Ross and Dave Jones , Tim Woodman , Ali Northcott, John Doidge.

UPDATE 11/09/08

The final total raised stands at over £1000 which has made the suffering worthwhile , thanks again . The total distance covered was 117km with 3480 meters of ascent , a bit shorter than I estimated but far enough for me !

With the run over I am finishing with the 'PARTY IN THE PADDOCK'  Saturday 4th October 2008 at Meavy village . Live music by 'Bloody Offal' bar , bbq , marquees and cheap Jail Ale. Tickets £5 from myself , call 07920094196 . All welcome !
