We provide free accommodation for families to keep them close to their sick child

Story

Longstanding legend at AEW, Steve Burne was diagnosed with cancer in May 2017 which was confirmed as terminal in October. This is a reminder that time is most precious.

In addition to Steve’s role at AEW, he has been closely involved with Ronald McDonald House Charities for 15 years and acted as Chair of the Manchester House Board of Governors since it opened 5 years ago. The Ronald McDonald House in Manchester supports families whose children are undergoing treatment at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital or St Mary’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The 60 bedroom House provides a free, welcoming place to stay. Each bedroom can accommodate up to four people and the House has communal living areas such as kitchens, playrooms and a garden. House staff are on hand to offer a listening ear and organise activities so families can take some time away from the hospital, to gather strength, but still be close to their child.

Steve’s experience as Chair of Ronald McDonald House in Manchester, the love for his own family and understanding of the pressures and stress through illness has resulted in a new resolve: an aim to raise £250,000 to convert three spaces in the Manchester House into larger 6 person family rooms and to do it in his lifetime. The rooms will be named in Steve’s honour.

Legend at work, Steve is more accurately described as a SUPERHERO by his youngest son, Seb.

We invite all colleagues, friends, associates and their families to join us  on STEVE’S SUPERHERO WALK with Steve, his sons Daniel, Adam, Seb and his family, from AEW’s office to Ronald McDonald House Manchester, on Sunday 18th February, in aid of the Steve Burne Rooms at Ronald McDonald House.

The route is personal to Steve and totals 2.5 miles – achievable for us all. Please gather outside Zenith Buildings, Spring Gardens from 1.15pm for a prompt 2.00pm start. The route will be clearly way marked by fancy dress superhero’s and set out on a kid’s activity map. Fully completed activity maps will receive a prize.

Refreshments and family entertainment will be provided at Ronald McDonald House at the end of the walk with an opportunity for House tours.

This is aimed at families as inclusive fun for all so please feel free to dress up as your favourite superhero for a chance to win additional prizes on the day!

We recommend a minimum £25 donation per family, although this is discretionary. £25 is a special threshold for Ronald McDonald House Charities as it represents the cost of one nights accommodation per family room. There is no a fixed donation and we encourage everyone to give as generously as you are comfortable.
