Story
In Accra, Ghana, incidences of pregnancy among street girls are extremely high, with many babies born literally on the streets to mothers who are themselves only young teenagers. Low literacy rates, the lack of parental support and ignorance of ‘safe sex’ also contribute to very young girls becoming pregnant. The youngest pregnant street girl we have helped was 13 years old.
To address this appalling situation, Street Girls Aid developed The Baby Care Programme in the shanty district of Accra. It is a unique and highly effective programme, which gives practical help to these young mothers and their babies aged up to 6 years old. The mothers can leave their babies at the crèches while they go out to find work or receive vocational training.
There are currently 750 babies being cared for in 5 crèches where they receive a nutritious meal, regular medical attention, including vaccinations, basic education and safe place to enjoy their childhood.
