Story
John, Maddie and Duncan would like to announce the successful completion of our cycling and camping challenge. We suffered only from the occasional bruise (Maddie especially), rising damp, ingrained red earth, and inconveniently placed mosquito bites. We remained largely untroubled by modern day niceties such as electricity, running water and loo seats (or pedestals for that matter). We did battle with man-eating sleeping bags (Duncan) and fermenting luggage (all). And we covered some 425 kms with an undiminished positive optimism (well, mostly) that was an inspiration to all.
Most of all we would like to thank our Ugandan hosts. We travelled fromLakeMburoin the southwest to Mount Elgon in the east via a whole host of wonderful places such as the Ngamba Island Chimp Sanctuary, the source of theNile, the Hairy Lemon and the Scorpion Campsite and Brothel (as we subsequently learned). A very beautiful country with very charming people who were universally accepting of these pedalling "Mzungu" (travellers).
And we must finally thank Willy, Charles, Rosemary & Betty, the core team for Street Child Africa's project with theMaseseCommunitySchoolin Jinja, for their kindness in greeting us on a Sunday afternoon on a national holiday weekend. We had the opportunity to meet a community action group comprising, teachers, parents, civil groups and politicians all of whom are committed to enhancing the lives of street children in their community. We visited the Karamajong village where a number of our 10 child headed households are located and we had the honour of meeting four brothers who we (and you) are helping realise their substantial ambitions to become, among other things, a civil engineer and a lawyer.
It makes it all worthwhile.
Thank you all for your support.
John, Maddie & Duncan
p.s. All cyclists are financing their own trips, so 100% of the funds raised will go to Street Child Africa who will be tasked with allocating the funds where they are needed most at the time.
