Story

Please read all of this before making a decision.

My name is Stuart Humber, I am going to attempt the coast to coast trail on foot and unassisted in 120 hours (5 days), with a very good friend Gyula Rosinszki, to raise money for sports relief. We will be starting from St. Bees in the Lake District at 12.00 hours on the 17 of March, ascending and descending 7000 metres, burning 40000 calories, and hopefully finishing 192 miles later at Robin Hoods Bay, on the other side of the country, before 12.00 hours on the 22nd of March.

Neither Gyula or myself are naturally fit people, and have to work extremely hard to prepare for something like this. There are four reason for attempting this challenge from the obvious to the not so obvious, but I feel equally passionate about all of them:-

Firstly, and probably the most obvious, is for the charity. It is becoming increasingly more difficult to raise money in these difficult times, but are they really as difficult as the press and the powers to be want us to believe. How many of us have a nice 42inch tv on the wall with a sky package, have a few luxuries in the fridge or even manage a holiday or two. Look back in history just a couple of generations, to the 1 and 2 World Wars or the recession of the 80’s when mortgage rates were around 13%. How difficult is life really, when you compare it to the men, women and children I am trying to raise money for through Sports relief.

Secondly, I am attempting this to teach my two daughters a few lessons in life. I wish to show them that life is hard sometimes, and sometimes you have to go through things that will cause you great discomfort. People who are successful in life are not necessarily the ones with qualifications and degrees but the people that continually fight for what they believe in and who get knocked down again and again but still get back up and ask for more. We have become a generation of ‘if it’s broken - get a new one’, whether it’s a tv, washing machine, friendship or even a marriage. I don’t want my children growing up with that mentality. I wish to show them that anything important in life is worth fighting for and not to become part of this materialistic society we’ve developed. Maybe they won’t truly understand at this time of their lives but I hope in their subconscious it makes a difference and from time to time they can reflect.

I am also attempting this because I feel the most alive when I am pushing myself beyond my comfort zone, whether it be physical, mental or both. The feeling of accomplishing something you didn’t think possible is the best feeling in the world. If it inspires anyone to start living life out of their own comfort zone a bit more often, that would be an unexpected bonus. It’s what life is about.

Lastly, wouldn’t it be nice, just for once for the little man to make a difference. All the time you see celebrities doing one challenge after another, raising millions of pounds, which is a fantastic thing to see, but we’re not celebrities - we’re just everyday guys who want to make a difference and raise as much money as we can to help people less fortunate. We are putting in months of effort in with training, diet, planning, and expense. Please show your support by donating as much as you can afford or more. Let this year be the year the little man inspires you to help the needy instead, don’t let our efforts go to waste. I would love this to make its way to the celebrities you see on the tv, who, generously donate their time to raise money, now, it’s my turn to ask them to show their support in us. Help the little man to stand up and be counted. £10 or £20 over the whole scheme of things is not going to make a big difference to your bank balance, but will make you feel really good about yourself, it could, on the other hand make a huge difference in someone’s life who doesn’t even understand the word recession.

We don’t have the celebrity status to raise millions of pounds but we would like to make a difference and raise as much as we can – with your help! Rest-assured that we are training hard in preparation for this mammoth task to complete it.

Updated on Jan 26th 2012 at 7:02 AM from the JustGiving API

all you have to do is send a text STUH99 £5 to 70070 to show your support in us and what we believe.
