My story

UPDATE (21/2/12)

I have now 'signed-up' for this years Inverness Half Marathon which I will be running for MS Society Scotland on Sunday 11th March. I aim to raise another £164 for this charity which will take my current total of £5836 up to £6000.

UPDATE (03/10/11)

On Sunday the 2nd October, I completed the Loch Ness Marathon in a time of 4 hours, 58 minutes and 48 seconds.

Seven years ago when I was diagnosed with MS I never thought this would be possible. I am absolutely delighted at all the support I have received and the amount of money I have raised for this fantastic charity.

_____________________________________________________________________

Seven years ago, at the age of fifteen, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis following episodes of numbness and double vision. I was diagnosed during my Standard Grade exam year and as a result elected to take disease modifying injections throughout the remainder of my schooling. Sadly, I suffered badly with 'flu-like' side effects along with the fatigue I was experiencing and this affected my schooling. As a result I stopped taking the injections in 2007. I have now moved on to a drug called Tysabri which I receive once a month, by infusion, at the hospital.

This year I am participating in two events to raise money for MS Society Scotland. They are:

1) Inverness half-marathon (13th March) COMPLETED
2) Loch Ness marathon (2nd October) COMPLETED

My inspiration for running these events for MS Society Scotland is to help as many people as possible get the support they deserve. Also, a big inspiration to me is my auntie who has had Multiple Sclerosis for over ten years. As well as having the aim of raising as much money as possible for MS Society Scotland I am also keen to raise awareness of Multiple Sclerosis and the work being done by this great charity.

When I 'signed-up' for the Loch Ness Marathon I also signed up for the Inverness Half Marathon which I ran in March in terrible weather conditions. I began training in January which I found extremely difficult due to the wintery weather and also developing a persistant knee injury which would affect me every time I ran. However, I managed to run and complete the half-marathon despite the snow, freezing rain, strong winds and, of course, the knee pain! I have never been a long distance runner in the past.

Multiple Sclerosis is the most common disabling neurological condition affecting young adults, with diagnosis generally between the ages of 20 and 40. In Scotland, there are around 10,500 people with MS - more people per capita than anywhere else in the world. MS is the result of damage to the myelin - a protective sheath surrounding nerve fibres of the central nervous system. When myelin is damaged this interferes with messages from the brain and other parts of the body. There is currently no cure for MS. For some people, MS is characterised by periods of relapse and remission while for others it has a progressive pattern. For everyone, it makes life unpredictable.

The MS Society depends entirely on charitable fundraising and the support of the public and volunteers to be able to do their work. Your donation can help in so many ways, for example:

- A donation of £10 would help provide vital information leaflets about MS.
- A donation of £15 would pay for an hour of MS research time.
- A donation of £20 would help fund the cost of someone receiving 24-hour nursing care at the respite care centre.
- A donation of £30 would help towards the running costs of the MS freephone helpline.
- A donation of £50 would contribute to the individual support grant programme that provides mobility aids, adaptations and equipment.

You can also now donate to my fundraising page using JustTextGiving. Just text MSSR89 to 70070 followed by the amount you wish to donate. e.g to sponsor me £5, text MSSR89 £5 to 70070.

I was also been nominated as an inspiration person by my brother to be a 'Torchbearer' during the London 2012 Olympic Games. http://www.london2012.com/olympic-torch-relay .
I was successful in getting through the first stage of the process but was unfortunately not selected as one of the 2012 Torchbearers needed for the Olympic Torchbearer relay.

Thank you very much for your support to this fantastic cause. Your donation truly means so much to both myself personally, and of course, to MS Society Scotland. Every single penny donated is very much appreciated so please dig deep and support my efforts in supporting this great charity.

Your support can help change lives.
