We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to stop women dying from breast cancer.

Story

On 1st December 2009 I became 50 years old and wanted to mark this year of being 50 with a trek for charity.            I happened to buy the Health and Fitness magazine that announced the trek to Machu Picchu in October 2010.       It is somewhere I've always wanted to go and I wanted to raise money for the chosen charity of Breast Cancer Research. I have been lucky to not have any close relatives or friends that have been affected by breast cancer but I have read many stories and the statistics are frightening. I feel that the money raised will help future women avoid or fight this terrible disease.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

January 2010

I am working on a series of money raising events at the school where I work. I plan to run a lucky ticket draw in February so am collecting prizes at the moment.

Donna from school is going to help me run a Car Boot Sale on Friday 19th February we're hopeful that a lot of people are keen to sell stuff- should be good!

TREK DATE ON PAGE IS INCORRECT!! THE TREK IS IN OCTOBER!!

February
Car boot sale and Lucky ticket sales at the event take our offline total to 1,000 UK pounds! The event was quite successful and people were asking if it could be regular event!

27th Jan: Went on James's Nightline show on radio ( ARN 93.3) and talked about the challenge. Had some response and am beginning to collect more prizes. Am concerned as to lack of response so far with the car boot sale so will be leafleting the school again this week. James offered to shave his hair off to raise money!

March 2010

Am now planning QUIZ NIGHT- will sell Lucky Tickets and hold the draw that evening too- April 15th is the date!

April 19th

The total raised is now up to over 20,000 Dhs and one more event will hopefully reach the target donation of 50,000Dhs. With a Charity Challenge you pay for the trek yourself and then pledge to raise a certain amount of money, so all that I have raised will go to the charity.

The Quiz Night and Lucky Draw was on Thursday 15th April and six keen teams battled it out in a close contest with our amazing Quiz Master, Mike Worth, teasing and tantalising us with some tricky questions like, “Where do Chinese gooseberries come from?” There were a lot of laughs and new facts acquired too!

The Lucky draw first prize, kindly donated by Etihad Airways, was won by Robert Liddell from the High School. Thanks to Etihad for the fantastic prize! Panne Caldo joined in with some free pizza tasting and offers for their food.

Training for the trek continues weekly with both strength and endurance workouts at Fitness First. I hope to complete a few hikes in the summer in the UK. On a personal challenge note, from being someone who never really did any running, I have just completed my first 5Km run without stopping. Previously I was building up walking/ running intervals of a few minutes each. I am looking forward to the trek in October!
