Fundraising for Restless Development
Story
I’m currently on an unexpected Gap Year this year and will be volunteering with Restless Development on a three month placement in South Africa in May 2012. However, as part of my placement I am still required to fundraise so that Restless Development as a charity can do loads of wonderful things! Please help me and dig deep!
Restless Development volunteers directly reach 500,000 young people each year, and next year I will be one of those people contributing to a positive change. To provide an indication of the work I will be completing, projects undertaken by previous volunteers resulted in volunteers providing villages in Nepal with clean water, established solar power cooking devices as well as building classrooms to help educate local children. Restless Development is a charity which is focused to provide long term solutions, as well as sustainable ones. All of the programme work is designed specifically to meet the needs of the country and communities we will be working in. Given that we focus on the issues that most effect young people, however, it is very likely that funds raised will be helping me to tackle crucial issues such as sexual and reproductive health (including HIV), unemployment and other factors that contribute to poverty.
Importantly, my work with Restless Development does not finish following my return to the UK. I will return as lifelong Restless Development Alumni, remaining involved by campaigning, researching, becoming a trainer or completing work with my local community. Crucially, however, I will be playing a key role in helping people in the UK understand why reducing global poverty is important, as well helping others understand how help can be provided. Though my placement is funded, I cannot stress enough that the requirement to fundraise regardless is an essential one. I will happily be keeping everyone updated on my experience through a blog, of which I will provide information on in the near future. I am therefore writing to request a possible contribution, however small, towards the costs of this work, not only benefiting the community in which I shall be working, but enabling great personal growth within myself.
