Have you ever been sunburnt? Or know anyone who has?
Thought so...well, did you know that just one case of sunburn can double your risk of skin cancer?
And did you know that the South-west has the highest level of skin cancer in England with 211 deaths between 2003-2006? (And it's on the increase....)
Do you want to do something about this killer which is now the second most common cancer in the 15 - 35 age group?
Welcome to the SunSafe fundraising page!! Sunsafe has had a huge impact across Cornwall this summer, taking the van from one end of the county to the other to promote safety in the sun. We've been reminding people of why it's important to avoid excessive UV exposure and sunburn: it increases your risk of skin cancer! We've also been equpping people with the knowledge they need to spot the signs of skin cancer early. With more than 50 events attended, 6 drop in mole clinics to increase early diagnosis and primary schools visits to educate the youngest, most vunerable skins, we hope we've done a lot to change attitudes and save lives in Cornwall.
Now it's time to look to the future! We've got so much more work to do. Skin cancer is on the increase, with Melanoma, the deadliest form, claiming 211 lives in the South-west alone between 2003 and 2006. We want to turn this around, but we have to buy ourselves more time to continue this work and reach more people. So Jo Pope, Jess Tyrell, Janine Beaton, Clare Hughes, Sam Williams and myself, Cecilia Shakerley are running 13.1 miles to raise money to give something back to Harry Townsend, who provided the majority of the funding for the first phase of 'SunSafe in Cornwall'. Are we mad?! Maybe -the training is tough and we're not even halfway there yet - but we feel this is important for Cornwall - for the future of our children, people who work outside everyday, and everyone who enjoys the great outdoors we have here. Our team is made up of Treliske skin cancer nurses, SunSafe campaigners, and those who have experienced bereavment due to Melanoma: We know saving skin from sun damage saves lives! Please give generously so we can continue this important work. Anything from a penny to a hundred pounds will make a difference. A big thank you from the SunSafe team xxx
