Mark Criddle, Coxswain of Torbay’s RNLI lifeboat, based on the south coast of Devon, and five of his crew have set themselves a huge challenge for the charity’s biggest fundraising event, SOS Day 2010.

 

The Surf Off Scotland SOS challenge will begin at one minute past midnight on SOS Day, Friday 29 January 2010. When Mark and his crew (Gary Fletcher, James Hoare, Roger Good, Mat Tyler, and Matt Maxted) will set off from the lifeboat station at Berry Head in Brixham and drive through the night to arrive at a beach on the west coast of Scotland as morning breaks. On arrival a local surfer will give the crew, who cannot surf, a lesson, during which all six must catch a wave and stand up before they can get back in the car and travel back to Torbay.

 

They must complete this challenge in 24 hours!

 

After an appeal by the local Herald Express newspaper, generous offers by local businesses and individuals mean that the crews Surf Off Scotland challenge’s travel expenses, and more are covered.

 

This means their target of £3,000 will all go towards the RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat crews training and equipment. Please help them to reach this target and sponsor their foolhardy SOS challenge.

 

RNLI SOS Day takes its name from the international mayday distress signal, Save Our Souls. But for the purpose of fundraising, SOS Day has a reputation for inspiring all manner of wild and wonderful variations on those three letters; so much so that planned events include Sizzle Our Sausages (a winter barbecue), Shiraz or Sauvignon (wine tasting evenings), Soap Our Saloons (a car wash) and even Surf Off Scotland!
