Swanley Athletics Club Three peaks Challenge · 10 July 2010

We are ellenor. Your local hospice charity, providing vital support to patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses across North Kent and Bexley. At ellenor, we embrace life, offering support to adults and children from the moment of diagnosis and beyond.

Story

Five runners from Swanley & District Athletics Club embarked on the infamous Three Peaks Challenge on 10th July. For those who haven't heard about it - it's a hiking (and running) challenge to ascend and descend Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, the three highest mountain peaks in Scotland, England and Wales within a 24 hour period.

Ben Nevis is the highest Peak at 4,409ft, next is Snowdon at 3,560ft and then Scafell Pike at a mere 3,206ft. The weather as always in the British Isles plays an important role in the success of this 24 hour challenge so the Swanley runners were hoping for good weather and clear roads for the minibus to transport them swiftly to each mountain.

The Weather was pretty awful on top of Ben Nevis and the descent slippy, Scafell Pike was similar with bitingly cold wind on top. The drive was slower than we would have liked due to the weather and sat nav problems, however the challenge was completed successfully in a time of 25 hours and 10 minutes. A great achievement and a challenge that will not be forgotten easily, the stiff legs days later are a constant reminder!!

We would like to thank Ben for organising this great challenge and ensuring seamless travel arrangements and comfortable accommodation along the way.

We would also like to thank our driver and unsung hero Matt Woolstone. Matt gave up a long weekend to drive us nearly 1000 miles....Matt you're a true gent...THANK YOU FROM THE WHOLE TEAM.

Swanley & District Athletics Club are based at Swanley Park, Kent. We are raising money for a wonderful local charity - Ellenor Lions Hospice,  which provides care for people with cancer and other progressive, life threatening illnesses.
