Right then, here we are; swimming for apes, why?
Well; the Orang-utan is Asia’s only great ape and the world’s largest tree dwelling mammal, yet with a slow reproductive system (reproducing only once every 6-10 years) this leaves them highly vulnerable to the threat of extinction. This threat comes from the total destruction of their habitat in the form of deforestation, the burning of peat forests and clearance for palm oil plantations. Nearly 70% of all palm oil produced goes into our food stuffs, so you can pretty much guarantee that nearly all of the food in you cupboard will have palm oil in it, sometimes listed as vegetable oil. Once the logging companies have left and the palm oil companies move in, the simplest way to clear an area is by fire - in 1997-1998 an out of control clearance fire killed almost 8,000 Orang-utans in Borneo.
Put simply, if something is not done, if pressure is not put on the right companies to source their palm oil from sustainable methods then it is predicted that within 20 years Orang-utans will be extinct from the wild.So give me, and the long-armed orange-haired great apes, some of your money then and you can at least get to have a laugh at me in a wetsuit floundering around in a cold lake in September!
Go on, even just a little bit, it all helps.Fanks.x
