Story

Firstly thank you for coming to our swimtofrance page.

Last year saw the sad passing of Henry Surtees, a Worth boy and an up and coming racing driver who looked destined to follow in his father's footsteps. I decided that we could do something great in his memory and it was suggested that I should swim the English Channel in order to raise money for the charity his parents selected - Headway. Knowing that this was one of the hardest physical challenges in the world I decided that I could not do it on my own and began to look around for team mates in order to swim a Channel Relay.

After a lot of asking, persuading and at times begging I found a group of swimmers dedicated enough to take up this enormous challenge. And so we began our training in September 2009. We have now done over 1000 hours of swimming between us and are still hard at it, doing three hours per week in the pool and another hour in the freezing waters in dover plus weights sessions in the gym and other fitness work. As you can see we are putting alot of effort into this and we ask that you can join us and put something in too!

We are also giving money to the Matthew Elvidge Trust, aimed at helping young men with depression and getting them back on their feet, because of the sad death of Nick Elvidge's cousin and to the Sussex Air Ambulance as without them Hannah's cousin would probably not be with us today. Sadly the Matthew Elvidge Trust is still in the process of becoming a registered charity so if you wish to donate to them please contact Nick Elvidge at 06nelvidge@worth.org.uk. To donate to the Sussex Air Ambulance please click here.

Photos, training updates and the like will be posted here as we go so keep an eye on the website to see how we're doing! Also please do leave your comments and encouragement below as it really makes the difference at 6am on a cold morning!

A huge thank you must go out to those who have helped us on our way with this challenge. Firstly Mr Carminati at Worth School for allowing us to train and supporting us on our adventure and also for the support of the Williams family who have driven buses, sorted admin and worked tirelessly to help us achieve our goals. I must also thank the parents of the swimmers who have funded the boat in order to allow their children to do something great. Finally I must say a big thank you to Nuffield Health gym and K2 Crawley leisure for allowing us to train free of charge.

On behalf of the three charities and all the swimming team thank you for your donations.
