Thanks for taking the time to visit the Carbisdale Castle ' Time After Time' Appeal page. This year SYHA Hostelling Scotland is celebrating it’s 80 anniversary.     To mark this special occasion in the organisation’s history, SYHA is undertaking a renovation project at one of our most unique and best- loved Youth Hostels, Carbisdale Castle. In this, our 80 year, we need your help to renovate the clock tower and repair the clock to full working order.   The clock and clock tower at Carbisdale Castle are steeped in history as is the rest of the castle. The castle was built near to the turn of the last century for the then Duchess of Sutherland. The castle was later donated to the Scottish Youth Hostels Association in 1945. It has been known as Carbisdale Castle Youth Hostel since then and in the 56 years that the building has been running as a Youth Hostel, almost 900,000 guests have passed through it’s doors.   The clock  at Carbisdale is fascinating to historians and hostellers alike. The castle tower only has clock faces on three of its four sides. Legend has it that the reason that there is no clock on the side facing Sutherland is that the Duchess refused to give her former relatives in Sutherland the time of day!   The clock at Carbisdale has not been in working order for much of the time that the castle has been running as a Youth Hostel. We are launching this appeal to raise £80,000 to get the clock restored to full working order and renovate the clock tower to enable our guests to see the inner workings of the newly restored clock.   As part of the charity’s commitment to promoting the heritage aspects of our Hostel buildings, we are keen to provide educational experiences throughout our Youth Hostels wherever possible. this project will benefit the many young people and school groups who visit the Hostel each year.   Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
