UPDATE: 12th August. They did it!!!! A fantastic effort from the boys. Well done all of you. 110 miles in two days is no mean feat, especially when you remember that here in Wales we are famous for our steep mountains!
It started off as an idea for an interesting cycle ride. Mike (Michael Powell Cross Stitch Art), Nigel (Coats Crafts), John and Phil (Embroider Stitch) decided to cycle the Taff Trail from Cardiff to Brecon in Powys, all 55 miles of it. Then the next day they are going to cycle all the way back! The date was set for 11/12th August 2010. Someone thought that it would be a good idea to use the ride as a fundraiser. So who should they raise money for?
Four years ago a healthy 19 year old called Geraint was enjoying the outdoor life. He climbed, surfed, rode a large motorbike, sported a ponytail, and was attending the first term of a college course that would give him a qualification in outdoor pursuits. He started to feel unwell, nothing specific, just a bit 'under the weather' but this escalated rapidly until he became very ill. A few weeks of tests brought the news that Geraint had Lymphoma. He spent a year in hospital, had months of gruelling chemotherapy, surgery and a bone marrow transplant. He finally achieved remission but a combination of the cancer itself and the treatment left him bruised and battered. Two years on he is in remission, but still suffering the after effects of all that he has gone through. The Leukaemia and Lymphoma Society are working hard to eradicate all blood cancers and save other people from having to suffer as Geraint did.
And the connection? Geraint's mother, Julia, is Mike's designer.
