This project was proposed on behalf of Kibirizi School by Josiah Karwihula, a local education official who played a major part in 2 past EGP projects with New Vision school in the same area of Bukoba District, northwest Tanzania. Kibirizi ward had no secondary school which made it hard for many students to progress beyond primary school. The community decided to start one, and with support from the local government who contributed industrial materials towards the construction, they built three classrooms.
There are now around 200 students in the school and the current building is not large enough for this number - the school day is split into shifts with half studying in the morning and half in the afternoon. Because of this the school board have asked to work with EGP this year to build an extra two classrooms, which will cost approximately £8500. These will create a better learning environment for students and teachers, and allow more primary school leavers from the 5 local tributary schools to attend. There is still a lot of support for the school from the local community, who will be contributing materials towards the project and working alongside the paid skilled labourers and EGP volunteers on the site. Mr Themistocles Rwegoshora, the Kibirizi Headmaster will be overseeing the project with support from Josiah.
Our volunteers will also be involved in school activities such as teaching, sports and running evening classes. We are living within the community and hope to integrate with the locals and be part of the community.
