Every two hours, someone in the UK will become paralysed. Globally, it is estimated that 15.4 million people are living with paralysis. At Spinal Research our vision is to create a world where paralysis can be cured, no matter when the injury occurred or where in the world.

Story

Although it doesn't seem that long ago ... this August sees a ten year milestone for me since falling off a mountain in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  In the fall I fell approximately 200ft and as you can imagine I have a few scars and a number of tales to show and tell for it.  However, I am constantly reminded how lucky I was as I servely damaged my neck and pelvis.  I suffered a dislocation of C5 and C6, fractured C4 and narrowed my spinal cord, narrowly missing paralysis.  That along with a number of other injuries it can be said that I was one lucky person on that fateful day, which definitely changed my outlook on life from what I believe is for the better.  You can read about my falling adventure here http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/feb/21/experience-mountain, if you want a bit more gory details. Although I have limited movement in my neck after I was put back together again, and have suffered a few set backs, there have been so many positive things that have come from it.

In order to celebrate this mark I can think of no better way other than to walk up 3 hills, otherwise known as the three peaks.  It is something I have wanted to do for a while, but it is only over the last couple of years I have had the confidence to get out walking in terains like this once more.  So to keep me in line, I have managed to convince (although it didn't take any convincing) a couple of other crazy people to join me in this venture and complete the three peaks in under 24 hours.  I have laid down the challenge of trying to complete it in around 22 hours.... Well for those who know me, if I am going to do something I may as well make it as hard as possible.  It will be quite a challenge and the team shall be hanging up their paddle and doning on the walking boots, well we will be after a small matter of the European Champs at the end of July.

So the team is Sarah Millest, Mags Dilai, Jill Richardson and myself, all people I have met through GB Dragon Boating.  They have all kindly agreed to raise money with me for Spinal Research, where I have been raising money and on occasions done publicity for them in the national press and tv over the last decade.

The reason for choosing this chairty is the fact the money goes into research and without this research the lifesaving operation I had wouldn't have happened and I would now definitely be in a wheelchair or worse.
