Raising money for Leeds Hospitals Charity and The Candlelighters Trust

Story

On Friday 20th September our whole school will be taking part in a sponsored walk. Will be attempting to raise money for a cause that the pupils have chosen and is very close to all our hearts, Leeds Children’s Hospital and Candlelighters. We are all so keen to do this in memory of one of our pupils, Daniel Davies- Riand who tragically passed away this year of brain cancer. News of Daniel’s passing has had a profound impact on the school community and we want to try to do something positive in his name. Daniel was a Year 8 pupil who was the most remarkable, kind and decent young man and we miss him every day.

From his parents - John and Hilary Davies-Riand

This cruelty can happen to anyone at any time. Living a country life with the cleanest of air and water, eating well, avoiding harms and keeping fit isn't always a protective shield, as we found out. Cancer is indiscriminate.

Having a child diagnosed and treated for cancer is so traumatising emotionally and physically for the child, their siblings, parents and any other carers that help, be it family or friends. We found having a space in the hospital to be peaceful and try and get some privacy is vitally important, as well as receiving one-to-one care and attention from play and therapy nurses, dedicated MacMillan nurses, and councillors. This is the area that we feel that any money raised will be best spent and go furthest. Something we as Dan's parents can be intrinsically involved with too to make sure every last penny raised is put towards making a positive difference.

Dan was such a fantastic sunny young man. He was a kind, funny, smart, determined, brave and handsome lad with a beaming smile.

He was staunchly loyal to his friends and family, as well as being gifted at so many sports.

Tennis was ultimately his chosen sport. He played in nationals, has a full trophy wall at home and he proudly played for his home county of Yorkshire, as well as being sponsored by Head. He was the boy that had it all, and was a beacon of light in our lives, and to those that knew him. This is how we want him to be remembered.

We are supporting two charities -Candlelighters and Leeds Hospitals Charity. Where possible we would like donations to be equal to both. Thank you :)
