10K in the 10th Month- Building Futures · 1 October 2015

We’re a girls’ rights organization. We’re part of a global network striving for a just world that advances children’s rights and equality for girls. We partner with adolescent girls and their communities in 80+ countries to overcome oppression and gender inequality.

Story

Together, our global Embassy team (a division of Study Group) has committed to collectively walk, run, row, cycle, or swim 10,000 km in the 10th month of the year (October).  This is the equivalent distance to traveling from our English school in Oxford, UK to our school in New York, and then onto our school Los Angeles.  We will be doing this all while raising money for our Building Futures project of building a primary school in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.

Study Group’s Building Futures is supported by a combination of corporate donations, staff and student fundraising.

A sustainable commitment to local communities

The vision for Building Futures is for Study Group to provide a long-term, sustainable commitment to educational projects in developing regions. Specifically, the ambition is to support communities through the building of schools and the provision of education materials and resources.

Our latest project

For our ninth project, our staff and students voted to support work in Anuradhapura, a district in northern Sri Lanka, to improve primary school enrolment, retention and completion. By constructing a new primary school with two new buildings, improving access to water and sanitation, and delivering a range of teacher training and school management initiatives, this project aims to improve the education opportunities for an estimated 413 boys and girls.

Ten years and counting

Conceived as a direct response to the devastation and loss caused by the Asian Tsunami in 2004, Building Futures has gone on to support projects all over the world, including Aceh (Indonesia), Zounzounkanme (Benin) Codó Nova (Brazil), Liu Shu(China), Van Han Commune (Vietnam), Dosso and Tillaberi Districts (Niger), our school project in Cambodia, and most recently the Vehari District (Pakistan).

    Fundraising by staff and students

Staff and students regularly organise and participate in fundraising events to raise money for our projects, in all of our centres worldwide, which are carried out by development organisation, Plan International.
